Healthy Vegetarian Meal in Management of Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus is a condition when a person has high blood sugar - this is either because the body is not producing enough insulin, or the cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced. Some symptoms of having high blood sugar includes frequent urination, increased thirsty, and increased hunger. Type 1 diabetes is where the body fails to produce enough insulin, and the patient is required to inject insulin. Type 2 Diabetes is where a person has insulin resistance, where their body fails to use insulin properly. It is for this second type that studies have found healthy vegetarian meals can play an important role in the management of type 2 diabetes.

There are also other forms of diabetes such as Gestational diabetes, where pregnant women who do not have diabetes, have a high blood glucose level during pregnancy. Other forms of diabetes mellitus include congenital diabetes, which is due to genetic defects of insulin secretion, cystic fibrosis-related diabetes, steroid diabetes induced by high doses of glucocorticoids, and several forms of monogenic diabetes. Over 171 million people worldwide sufferer from diabetes, and type 2 diabetes is by far the most common affecting 90 to 95% of the US diabetes population. [1]

There are studies that have found individuals who follow healthy vegetarian diets are only half as likely to develop diabetes compared to non-vegetarian dieters. Other studies have found that low-fat vegan diets improves glycemic control to a greater extent compared to conventional diabetes diets. These studies suggested that this beneficial effects is primarily attributed to the greater weight loss experienced from vegetarian diets. [2]

Also, many of these health benefits from healthy vegetarian meals results in the reduced intake of saturated fats and high glycemic index foods, and increased consumption of dietary fiber and vegetable protein. Furthermore, vegetarian diets and vegan diets improves plasma lipid concentrations, and has been shown to reverse atherosclerosis progression - a condition in which an artery wall thickens as the result of a build-up of fatty materials such as cholesterol. Healthy vegetarian meal plans have also been indicated to have potential advantages for the management of type 2 Diabetes. [2]
